First thanksgiving : Date Story,Facts and Menu

When was the First Thanksgiving ?

The modern day secular festival, Thanksgiving Day can be traced back to 1621 in Plymouth, when 53 pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians celebrated their first successful harvest, for which they thanked God and a feast was celebrated in November. These pilgrims were helped by the local tribe known as Wampanoag in settling down in Plymouth by teaching them how to cultivate corn, extracting sap from the maple trees, catching fish and avoiding poisonous plants, all these being necessary for their survival.

First Thanksgiving Story and Facts

The First Thanksgiving is said to have been the celebration of a good corn harvest that was planted by the pilgrims who had settled in Plymouth in 1620. In November, 1621 they had their first successful harvest that they ought to celebrate by thanking the mighty Lord and inviting the Wampanoag tribe who had taught them fishing, and harvesting to a feast.

There is said to have been only 53 pilgrims who had survived the harsh weather, scurvy and outbreak of contagious diseases from the 102 passengers who had boarded the ship called Mayflower in search of a new quest in the shores of the United States. They were joined by the Massasoit (meaning the leader), the chief of the Wampanoag along with some 90 men of the tribe came to honor the celebrations that went on for a week and many feasts that included duck meat and deer that were brought as gifts by the Wampanoag Indians and traditional games like hunting and target shooting were played between them.

Where was the first Thanksgiving

The First Thanksgiving was celebrated in Plymouth, presently Massachusetts in 1621. Although they did not call it Thanksgiving then, it was all about thanking god for a good autumn harvest. This is what the modern day Thanksgiving stands for, thanking god for one’s possessions and fortunes.  The practise for an annual Thanksgiving Day celebrations with gay abundance along with the family spread across America, and in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving Day to be celebrated on a Thursday in November.

First Thanksgiving feast

The First Thanksgiving feast lasted for a week with many meals eaten together between the pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe who had come from their villages by a two day walk. So naturally they stayed by building houses for themselves, having a feast and the joyous mood of the celebration was in the air as the two groups engaged in playing games like target shooting, pin games and the children playing blind man’s bluff together in between meals.

First Thanksgiving menu

The first Thanksgiving menu did not include a Turkey while cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes weren’t even invented at that time. Duck would probably have been the main course as there was abundance of the fowl in bay area. Other likely dishes on the menu may have been seafood, onions, cabbage, squash and corn as well as deer meat.

This is how the foundation of first Thanksgiving gesture was laid by few pilgrims in the Plymouth city. This pious tradition then followed by many people in the future and the occasion of Thanksgiving became popular among people in the country. Presently, Thanksgiving is celebrated by having family dinner, watching football, enjoying Thanksgiving extravagant parade etc. So, let’s start preparing for this year’s Thanksgiving 2012 on 22nd November. Have Fun!!!
